Carer revels in World of Sound, thanks to the gift of hearing

Rex Vick, retired Chartered Surveyor from Wells-next-the-Sea is the fortunate recipient of a pair of hearing aids from the National Campaign for Better Hearing, whose mission is to raise awareness of the importance of regular hearing tests.

Rex likes to keep active, he takes part in discussion groups and is a member of the Royal British Legion and collects antiques.  Over the last couple of years his hearing has begun to let him down, he was missing things at meetings or every day conversations.  He also cares for his wife who experiences dementia and the hardest part was trying to get her to speak up louder, which was not an easy request and it made life at home tougher.

Audiologist from Hidden Hearing King’s Lynn centre, Adam Smith who nominated Rex says, ‘Rex is such a worthy recipient of this award.  His hearing was affecting his relationships and causing him to withdraw from his world.  He cares for his wife and it’s good to be able to support him.’

Rex says, ‘I’ve been bought back to the full world of sound.  No more missing out, saying please speak up and what did you say!  When I first got fitted I went out to the car park to drive home and wondered what all the noise was, then I realised it was everyday sounds.  The wind, the trees, a bird singing, some boys laughing in the street and calling to each other.  I could hear their footsteps on the pavement, a car accelerating in the distance and a dog barking.  I was hearing properly for the first time in years.  It really is amazing, I’m so grateful.’
